Even after using microfiber towels, expensive car shampoos, and an air dryer to clean your car, have you ever seen paint flaws and a dull finish on the clear coat? With time, a vehicle can inevitably suffer some scratches, scrapes, and scuffs. Powerful UV sun rays can also beat down on the clear coat, causing oxidation that eventually leads to the paint surface fading out.
If you would like to restore your vehicle's original flawless shine, maybe it is time to get paint correction work done on it.
Paint correction is a service provided by auto detailing companies. It is the process of getting rid of imperfections and flaws in a car's clear coat, such as etchings, scratches, oxidation, buffer trails, scuffs, and more.
This process rejuvenates a vehicle's paintwork by removing the flaws that haze, dull, and oxidize the surface. The detailer carefully buffs out the imperfections on the vehicle paint surface with polishing pads, several polishing machines, and abrasives.
Vehicle paintwork defects that paint correction services can address include:
Auto detailing and body shops offer paint correction services, as a way to help avoid a costly repaint. Paint correcting is a better option than repainting because it makes the car shine while preserving its original factory appearance. It eliminates flaws instead of just masking them with paint.
Paint correction essentially removes the clear paint coat because a gritty, granular substance is involved. When the detailer activates the electric polisher, it spreads the polish paste or liquid evenly onto the car's painted surface, creating friction that cuts through the transparent paint coat. The polishers have grit levels, with some designed to fill in a scratch, while others remove the transparent paint layer until the scratch is eliminated.
Removing defects and scratches also requires the paint surface to be leveled. Most people imagine that one can just pull scratches from the paint. This is, however, not the case.
To remove a scratch, the paint on the surrounding areas needs to be leveled up to the scratch's lowest point.
As in, detailers do not work on the scratch itself; instead, they work around it. This concept might seem terrifying, but in reality, it is not. Though the paint is removed, it is done so in very small- at times microscopic- amounts. The removal of light scratches is done by taking off only a few microns of paint. Leveling of surface paint can be done by hand, but machine polishing is 95 percent more effective.
If a scratch is deep, it is best to consult an auto body repair professional or a professional detailer to remove the damaged paint.
A DIY may result in the cut being too thin, making it hard for protective coatings to bond with the surface. Also, the paint may not shine or pop as well as you had hoped.
The paint correction process is done in several stages- depending on the degree of damage to the vehicle's clear coat:
Stage 1- This is a single-step polish using a liquid polish, a cutting compound, and a pad. This stage aims to remove small swirls and marring.
Step 2- This process is the next progression when the vehicle's surface has moderate scratches and swirl marks embedded in it. Here two different combinations of pads and polishes are used. First, a more abrasive polish is used, followed by a finer compound that removes the light scratches that the abrasive polish left.
Stage 3- If this step is required, you should consult a professional detailer. This three-step process deals with heavy marring, swirls, or other defects. The first step involves using a heavy-cutting compound with a polisher pad and machine polisher that digs into the paint damage. The second step decreases the grit gradually, then finally, a light polishing compound smooths out the damage.
Note that a paint correction procedure should be done by a professional detailer so as not to result in more damage. Someone without specialized training can burn through or cause swirl marks on the paint surface.
Paint correction removes micro abrasives hence helping prevent corrosion of the paint coat. Additionally, it helps keep off dirt and other pollutants from the paint coat surface of the vehicle- a crucial step in ensuring the car lasts for years to come!
Since paint correction removes scratches, etching, swirls, and water spots- it helps improve the appearance car exterior.
Paint correction is a crucial step if you wish to have a paint protection film or ceramic coating applied to your vehicle.
Though the paint correction process eliminates swirls, scratches, and scuffs, it is still possible for the painted surface to get damaged again. That is why it is recommendable to have a ceramic coating or a paint protection film as a paint sealant to have a beautiful-looking car for longer.
